El instrumento que sostiene Averroes se llamó Vara de Jacob, ballesta y ballestilla (en inglés cross staff). Sirve para calcular la altura del sol y las estrellas (la polar preferentemente) sobre el horizonte, lo que permite calcular la latitud del lugar. Es un instrumento de navegación y astronomía anterior al sextante.
El autor de la obra es el pintor italiano Paolo Veronese (1557) y el cuadro se conserva en el Museo de Arte de los Ángeles.
